It contains many times more vitamin C than oranges. Because of this, along with strengthening the immune system, kiwi is beneficial in many diseases.
Despite being sold at a good price in the market, due to the properties present in Kiwi, it is in high demand in the country and the world. Due to its increasing demand, its horticulture is increasing rapidly.
How did the idea of Kiwi farming come about?
Sita Devi was growing potatoes and peas in her field till three years ago, but most of the crops were ruined due to wild animals and monkeys. Saddened by the loss of crops, the thought of giving up farming started in Sita Devi’s mind. Her husband Rajendra also used to advise her that she should stop farming.
In the meantime, someone told him about the kiwi promotion scheme of the Horticulture Department and also informed that monkeys do not harm the kiwi crop.
Then Sita Devi immediately contacted the Horticulture Department without wasting any time. Took complete information about Kiwi cultivation and decided that he had to grow Kiwi in his garden. He also took training for this in Himachal Pradesh and returned and started the production of organic kiwi in the fields.
When people made fun of
When Sita Devi decided to cultivate kiwi, the people of her village got involved in a conspiracy to break her spirits. Some people used to say that where is such a crop, which animals cannot harm, while some said that kiwi is an exotic fruit. Its yield will not bring color in the field of traditional crops. Where people’s fields are becoming barren, from where will kiwi grow etc.
As soon as people spoke to Sita Devi, she would have come to the attention of her training the very next moment. She promised herself that no matter what happens, no matter what anyone says, she will continue to grow the kiwi crop in her field. Once he was determined, he did not listen to anyone.
One quintal of kiwi produced
The hard work of Sita Devi and the training of the Horticulture Department came in handy. Last year, one quintal of kiwi was produced in Sita Devi’s field. He sold all this crop in his district itself. Sita Devi has currently planted 35 kiwi plants in her garden.
The reason for planting saplings in limited quantities is that all the plants get a good dose and the yield can be excellent. This time also Sita Devi is estimated to yield more than one quintal. The future is expected to be even better. Now she is busy marketing Kiwi outside the district as well.
Seeing Sita Devi, other farmers were also inspired
Due to the success of Sita Devi, other farmers of the area including Duvakoti have also been greatly inspired. Sita took care of the kiwi plants with great dedication. The Horticulture Department had given kiwi plants to 45 farmers two years ago, out of which only Sita Devi plants survived. Such was his dedication that under the National Rural Livelihood Project for irrigation, water tanks were built in his garden, which had a capacity of fifteen thousand liters.
In which he stored water. This also solved the problem of water supply in his field. Seeing this, the plants flourished and the desire and hard work of Sita Devi paid off.
Kiwi cultivation in India
Kiwi is considered a fruit of China. That’s why it is called Chinese Gooseberry. In view of the increasing demand of kiwi in India, its horticulture is being done on a large scale in states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Nagaland, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. According to earnings, this fruit is going to give more income than apple. Kiwi is widely cultivated abroad in New Zealand, Italy, America, China, Japan, Australia, France, Chile and Spain.
Selection of season and land for cultivation
January is the best month for Kiwi cultivation. Such areas are suitable for cultivation for kiwi, whose altitude is between 1000 to 2000 meters above sea level and the climate there is mild sub-tropical and mild temperate. There should be an average rainfall of about 150 cm in a year. In winter the temperature should remain up to 7 degree Celsius.
Well drained, deep, fertile, loamy sandy loam soil is suitable for its gardening. Whose pH value should be between 5.0 to 6.0. For planting kiwi cuttings, the ratio of 2:2:1:1 is suitable for sand, rotted manure, soil, wood sawdust and coal powder.

Sita Devi’s maternal uncle falls in Jaddhar village of Tehri district. Sita Devi is not much educated. Sita Devi has studied till class 10th. Today, because of her hard work and dedication, she is earning more income than those with a higher degree. She considers it her encouragement. Sita always dreamed of doing something big by reading and writing. When she was 19 years old, she was married.
All his dreams were left behind because of his family. But the kiwi became a way for him to prove himself. He gave his whole life without giving up and showed himself to be successful. The dreams that were left behind may once again walk with new hope.
