The region of Moradabad was an important part of various dynasties, such as the Panchala, the Nanda, the Guptas, the Mauryas, the Mughals and the Maukharis. During the reign of Akbar, it was established as the office of Chaupala Pargana. In 1624, Rustam Khan, the governor of Sambhal, annexed the region and it was named Rustam Nagar. In the early 19th century, the British began exporting brass handicrafts to foreign markets, attracting artisans from other parts of India such as Lucknow, Agra and Banaras. After India gained independence from the British in 1947, Moradabad soon became a part of the state of Uttar Pradesh.
