International Labor Day was first started in the world on 1 May 1886 in America. On May 1, 1886, the labor unions of America went on a nationwide strike for not keeping more than 8 hours of work. Thousands of laborers took to the streets. These workers were protesting for the work being done for 10 to 15 hours. Their demand was that the working hours should be fixed at 8 hours only. During the strike, there was a huge bomb blast in the Haymarket of Chicago. Although it was not known who did this blast, but after this the police started firing on the workers. In which many workers died. After this, in the second meeting of the International Socialist Conference in 1889, it was announced that International Labor Day would be celebrated on 1 May and all workers would be given leave from work on this day. Many countries including America also announced that the working time of 8 hours has been fixed. Since then Labor Day is celebrated every year on 1st May. At present, laws related to workers working for 8 hours are in force in many other countries including India.

When was Labor Day celebrated for the first time in India?
Labor Day in India was first celebrated on 1 May 1923 in Chennai. It was started by Com. Singravelu Chettiar, leader of Labor Kisan Party of Hindustan. At that time it was certified as Madras Day. A big demonstration was held in front of the Madras High Court under the chairmanship of Singravelu Chettiar and it was resolved that this Labor Day is being celebrated. Since then, a resolution was passed in India and it was agreed that this day will be celebrated as Labor Day in India. Since that time Labor Day is celebrated every year across the country. This day is a national holiday in India.
