Brace for the Cold: Winter’s Intensity Expected to Rise
If you’ve been enjoying the mild winter so far, it’s time to bring out your warmest quilts, blankets, sweaters, and jackets. The cold is about to get more intense. Over the past two days, North India, including Delhi-NCR, has experienced a noticeable drop in temperatures due to cold winds. If you were hoping for a quick relief from the chill, brace yourself—this winter is expected to be harsher than usual. The Meteorological Department has already issued warnings in this regard. Let’s explore how long this cold spell is likely to last.
Severe Cold Ahead
The Meteorological Department forecasts that this winter will be particularly severe, with a record drop in minimum temperatures. The cold wave is expected to hit hard from December 15th, bringing shivering conditions to regions like UP-Bihar and Delhi-NCR. The impact of this cold spell has already been felt following recent rains.
Duration of the Cold Spell
According to weather predictions, this winter might extend until February. While some regions may feel the cold more intensely, the overall minimum and maximum temperatures across the country are expected to be above normal. Weather experts suggest that the absence of La Nina, typically associated with colder winters, might mean a warmer-than-usual start. However, La Nina is likely to form around January and February 2025, potentially leading to a harsher winter period.
Increased Rainfall in December
This December is expected to witness above-average rainfall, with predictions indicating a 121% increase compared to the long-term average. Most parts of the peninsula, West-Central India, East-Central India, and some Northeastern regions may experience more rainfall than usual. Specifically, the southern peninsula, including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, Kerala, and South Interior Karnataka, could see rainfall up to 131% of the long-period average.
Prepare accordingly and stay warm this winter. For more updates, keep an eye on weather forecasts and advisories.
